Introducing Smart Retry: Never Miss a Reminder Again
Announcing our new intelligent retry system that automatically re-attempts missed reminder calls and adapts to your loved one's patterns.
We built HelloRemind because we know how critical it is for seniors to take medications on time and complete important daily tasks. But we also know that life is unpredictable—sometimes your loved one is in the bathroom, outside in the garden, or simply doesn’t hear the phone ring.
Today, we’re excited to announce Smart Retry: an intelligent system that ensures reminders get through, even when the first call is missed.
The Problem: Missed Calls Happen
Even with the best intentions, reminder calls sometimes go unanswered:
- Your loved one is in another room and doesn’t hear the phone
- They’re briefly outside checking the mail
- They’re in the bathroom
- The phone ringer volume was accidentally lowered
- They simply didn’t get to the phone in time
When a single reminder call goes unanswered, the entire purpose of the system fails—medications are missed, appointments are forgotten, and you lose peace of mind.
We knew we could do better.
Introducing Smart Retry
Smart Retry is our solution to missed reminders. Here’s how it works:
Automatic Re-Attempts
When a reminder call goes unanswered:
- First attempt: We call at the scheduled time
- If unanswered: We wait 5 minutes and try again
- Still unanswered: We wait 10 more minutes and try a third time
- Immediate notification: You’re alerted after the final missed attempt
Why this works: Most missed calls are temporary situations (bathroom break, didn’t hear the phone). Trying again a few minutes later usually succeeds.
Intelligent Timing
Smart Retry isn’t just about calling multiple times—it’s about calling at the right times.
Our system learns from patterns:
- Time-based learning: If your loved one typically answers better at certain times, we adjust retry timing accordingly
- Avoids over-calling: Retry attempts are spaced appropriately to avoid feeling harassing
- Respects quiet hours: If it’s late at night, we won’t retry until morning (customizable)
Customizable Settings
Every family is different. You control how Smart Retry works:
Number of retry attempts: Choose 0-5 retry attempts (default: 2)
Retry intervals: Set custom wait times between attempts
- Quick: 3, 5, 10 minutes (good for time-sensitive medications)
- Standard: 5, 15, 30 minutes (default)
- Gradual: 10, 30, 60 minutes (good for non-critical reminders)
- Custom: Set your own intervals
Retry windows: Set time limits for retries
- “Only retry within 1 hour of the original call time”
- “Keep trying until 9 PM”
- “No time limit—keep trying until answered”
Smart pause: Automatically pause retries if your loved one answers another reminder (indicates they’re available and just missed this specific call)
Real-Time Alerts for Caregivers
Smart Retry includes enhanced notifications so you always know what’s happening:
Status Updates
You receive real-time alerts for:
- ✅ First attempt answered: “Mom answered her 8 AM medication reminder”
- 🔄 Retry in progress: “First attempt unanswered, retrying in 5 minutes”
- ✅ Retry successful: “Mom answered medication reminder on second attempt”
- ⚠️ All attempts missed: “Mom didn’t answer her medication reminder after 3 attempts”
Detailed History
View complete call history:
- Original call time
- Number of attempts
- Which attempt was answered
- Total time to get a response
- Patterns over time
This data helps you:
- Identify if timing needs adjustment
- Notice concerning patterns (e.g., frequently missed morning calls might indicate sleep issues)
- Optimize reminder schedules
How Smart Retry Improves Medication Adherence
Early results from beta testing show impressive improvements:
Beta Test Results
- 83% of initially missed calls were answered on retry attempts
- Medication adherence improved by 22% compared to single-call systems
- Caregiver stress decreased by 35% (self-reported surveys)
- False alarm notifications dropped by 79% (fewer “missed reminder” alerts for temporary situations)
Real User Story
Margaret, a family caregiver from Ohio, shared her experience:
“My dad has dementia and sometimes wanders around the house. Before Smart Retry, he’d miss calls constantly and I’d get panicked alerts all day. Now, the system tries again a few minutes later and usually catches him. My stress levels have gone way down, and his medication adherence has improved dramatically.”
Technical Excellence
Smart Retry is powered by sophisticated backend systems:
Reliable Infrastructure
- Guaranteed retry execution: Our system has built-in redundancy to ensure retries happen even if our primary systems experience issues

- Instant failover: Backup systems activate automatically if needed
Privacy-First Design
Smart Retry maintains our commitment to privacy:
- No additional data collection beyond call success/failure

Smart, Not Annoying
We designed Smart Retry to be helpful, not harassing:
- Intelligent spacing: Retries are timed to allow for temporary unavailability without overwhelming
- Adaptive learning: The system learns when retries are most likely to succeed
- User respect: If a pattern suggests your loved one genuinely isn’t available (e.g., they’re at a regular weekly appointment), the system adjusts
